Things You Should Know About Red Eared SlidersIt’s true that turtles are cute and they look like they would make good pets. But before you decide to purchase slider turtles, specifically red eared slider turtles, make sure you know the following facts.

First, do know that they can get big. They look cute and fragile as little hatchlings but when they grow, they grow a lot! Don’t buy a tank with their hatchling size in mind. They can grow up to twelve inches so I suggest that you get a large enough tank, about ten gallons per inch of red eared slider.

Second thing that you must know is that they live for a long time, up to forty years or so. If you want slider turtles as pets, you better be committed to care for them through out their lifespan.

Third is that these slider turtles can carry salmonella and other bacteria, so please be conscious of your hygiene measures. They also poop a lot. I recommend you to have top-notch filters to keep your tank clean and free of smell and algae.

Last but not the least on the list is that it can have a habit of begging for food. It might go to the edge of the tank, press its cute little reptile face on the glass looking all hungry. I advise you to not give him any food. This can lead your pet to obesity. Feed him in regular intervals and do not fall for his act, no matter how convincing it is.

This is not to discourage you from getting red eared slider as pets. This is for you to be aware of what you are getting into. If you think you can handle it, then go ahead. Have fun with your pet!
