Why Not A Pet Snake
01 Jul 2009
Want to have a pet snake? Well, quite a brave and cool decision. Some people will consider it strange, but I’ll help you in this.
If you have decided to acquire a snake as a pet, keep in mind that it won’t be easy at all. It’s a very responsible job that demands much attention and care. Besides, take into account that most snakes live longer than 20 years.
Before acquiring a snake, learn what breeds are recommended as pets and which ones are dangerous. Avoid buying a large snake, as most of them are very dangerous. Green and water snakes as well as pythons and tree boas are also inappropriate for keeping at home. I don’t think I should mention how dangerous are Reticulated pythons, Anacondas and other venomous snakes.
The best pet snakes are corn snakes, gopher snakes, kingsnakes and ball pythons. Corn snakes have a very good temperament. Feeding them is not so problematic. They easily accept frozen prey. Besides, they grow up to 5 or 6 feet long, are easily tamed and are healthy, as a rule.
The Californian kingsnake is very easily tamed. They are not so fond of escaping every now and then, like other snakes. They eat very well: eat both frozen and fresh preys. Their sizes can reach up to 6, 7 feet long.
Gopher snakes are very alike to the above mentioned types. These snakes have a very good characteristic feature. They are very calm, are not fond of frequent escaping and are very predictable.
As I have already mentioned, ball pythons are also good pets. However, they have one disadvantage. Their eating may become a big headache for you. They may either accept frozen food or not. Their eating habits are not fixed.
We have mentioned the best breeds of snakes that can be kept as pets. They are different and each one has its own needs, but there are things all of them will demand from you: a clean enclosure, proper temperature and regular feeding.
Now you know that snakes need constant attention. Are you ready? If yes, then I wish you good luck!
